# Major Changes in GSA 10.1
The following is a summary that highlights the major features and changes in GSA 10.1.
# Ground spring, ground damper, and mass elements
Ground springs, ground dampers, and masses are no longer separate 0-dimensional elements but are now applied directly onto the nodes as properties.
Things to note
- When opening previous files, if the spring, damper or mass property axis is the same as nodal axis, then the property will be assigned to the node and the 0D spring/damper/mass elements will be removed.
- If the property axis is different to the nodal axis then the stiffness, damping coefficients, or mass/inertia attributes will be copied to a new property, transformed to the nodal axis direction, and assigned to the nodes. In this situation compression and tension-only ground springs will become linear springs.
This works for the majority of old files, but in the following cases the results in 10.1 may differ from previous versions. Warnings will be given if:
ground springs are tension or compression only and axis transformation is needed
ground springs use nonlinear spring curves and the property axis and nodal axis are not orthogonal each other
the damper property axis and nodal axis are not orthogonal each other
there are analysis stages and spring, damper, or mass elements that are not in all of the analysis stages.Note that for model with analysis stages, the “Stage Properties” setting can be used to remove the nodal stiffness/damping/mass from required stages.
In these situations we recommend that you adjust the model in the old version prior to opening. For example, in these situations ensure that the nodal and property axes are the same and the properties are updated as necessary:
If ground springs are tension or compression-only
When nonlinear spring curves are used by the spring property and the spring and nodal axes are not orthogonal
Be especially careful where the node has constraints upon it, such as restraints, rigid constraints, joints, or constraint equations, or if there are settlement loads on the affected nodes.
# Design
The German steel national annex (DIN EN 1993-1-1:2005) has been added to Eurocode EC3.
Concrete design can now be performed on 2D members using a design task
# Modelling
Meshing by Lines, Areas, and Regions has been replaced by 2D Members
3D members have been added, allowing the meshing of 3D elements. Wedge 6, Pyramid 5, and Tetra 4 element types have been added
# Seismic analysis
The following response spectrum has been added:
- Canadian NBCC (2015)
- Australian AS 1170.4 (2007)
